Chess is a game of strategy and tactics. It teaches one to think about the outcome of their actions and to plan strategically in order to overcome the opponent. Each player has an army consisting of a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, and two knights, and eight pawns. The aim of the game is to trap your opponent’s king, which is called Checkmate.
Besides, Chess is able to teach our children many more skills, such as accepting defeat and being humble in winning.
This game is enjoyable for all ages and Anne Hill Enrichment Centre is now offering a chess coaching programme (termly) to teach your children the magic of this game.
Mr. Girard Murphy Guevara has been an avid chess player throughout his life, from first being introduced to the game when he was in school, through to playing in the inter school league in Manila while he was at university.
He was drawn into the game as he thought it was interesting and challenging, and the satisfaction of winning against a more senior player spurred him on to play more and learn more. He was very active in chess; playing many games of chess every week.
Some of the important skills he has learned from this wonderful game are to accept defeat and be a sportsman about it, and learning from your own mistakes.
